South African Boxer Dies During First Round Of Bout
South African boxer, Mzwanele Kompolo reportedly slumped and died after been knocked down during the first round of a boxing match.
According to the South African sports ministry, Mzwanele later died in the hospital in Eastern Cape, where he was rushed to after his ill fated slump.
The “up and coming” fighter, lost by TKO in the first round of a bout against veteran, Siphenathi Qampi.
Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula said: “It is indeed sad to hear of this news involving the passing of this young upcoming athlete.”
Another boxer, Australian David Browne died on Tuesday after being knocked unconscious in a fight.
This brings to the fore concerns about the safety of the sport with boxers dying or battling with various illnesses later in life, and it is expected that a review of the boxing articles shouldn’t be far away.
