Ondo Assembly Re-elects Akindele As Speaker
Tears flowed yesterday as old members of the Ondo State House of Assembly walked out of the hallowed chamber after the speaker, Hon. Jumoke Akindele, officially announced the dissolution of the 7th Assembly.
The 8th House of Assembly was immediately inaugurated as Hon. Jumoke Akindele emerged as the speaker of the chamber for the second time.
The new lawmakers comprising 21 members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and five from the All Progressives Congress (APC) were inaugurated for the commencement of the 8th Assembly by the state governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.
After the dissolution of the 7th Assembly, the clerk of the House, Mr Debo Aladeyelu, called for nomination from the members for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
A member of the House, Hon. Olamide George, representing Akure North state Constituency, nominated Akindele, from Okitipupa Constituency 1 as the speaker of the Assembly and it was seconded by Hon Gbenga Araoyibo, representing Akoko Northwest 2 Constituency.
Another member, Hon. Adeniyi Malachi representing Ilaje Consituency 2 nominated Hon. Fatai Olotu from Akoko Northeast Constituency for the position of Deputy Speaker, while Hon Bamidele Oloyelologun seconded the motion.
Earlier, the Valedictory Session was held at the Assembly Complex for the 7th Assembly, where members took their turns to appreciate their various constituencies for the privilege given them to serve.
In her speech, the speaker, Hon. Jumoke Akindele, said the event availed them the opportunity to measure their performances in the last four years.
She noted that the state of infrastructure in various constituencies prior to their emergence in 2011 with the state of things at the moment will score them high in terms of performance.
She said, “The 7th Assembly has no doubt maintained a cordial relationship with the executive which was based on the tenets of interdependence and partnership.
As partners, we never competed but co-operated and synergised for good governance, economic growth, as well as to strengthen social order for the state”.
She said further that the 7th Assembly members also took their responsibilities as an arm of government and representatives of the people with all the seriousness it deserved to ensure that the state remains the best governed in Nigeria in terms of quality debates and unparalleled resolutions.
